Regional Air Transport
Regional air transport is one of the most resilient, globalized and performance-intensive segments in global air transportation.
Owing to its lighter infrastructure demands, and lower capital intensity, regional air transport is a reliable, cycle-agnostic transport mode utilized in most advanced economies’ remoter regions as well as a growing segment in more and more emerging and frontier economies.
This results in a population of typically smaller operators, ranging from flag carriers and legacy airline subsidiaries to smaller private businesses and start-up operators.
Turboprop aircraft have remarkable performance and economic advantages that often make them the only aircraft capable of supporting short-haul routes.
Due to the unique route profiles turboprop aircraft fly, they are typically utilised on short, thin routes, resulting in half the annual utilisation and operating altitude of most jets. This results in considerably lower airframe and component stress.
As of May 2017, the global commercial aircraft fleet is comprised of 34,917 units, of which 6,093 are commercial turboprop aircraft of the total turboprop market, approximately 5,000 of the aircraft are western built (ATR, Bombardier, Saab, Fokker, BAe).
